Alice Moody Chapin '35:

In 1996, in recognition of a generous gift from Ms. Alice Moody Chapin ’35, Carthage’s 80-acre campus was designated an arboretum. A woman before her time, Ms. Chapin enjoyed a successful international career which led her to live and work in Caracas, Venezuela for more than 20 years.
Today, the arboretum sustains multiple ecosystems and provides a beautiful natural setting for both students and the greater Kenosha community to enjoy. It also serves as a useful location for classes and individuals to conduct environmental research. Every year, the College aims to plant new trees from a variety of species to keep the arboretum abundant and diverse.

150 Years of Carthage Women:

This app was created in 2020 in conjunction with the 150 Years of Carthage Women Celebration. In 1870, Carthage became one of the first institutions of higher learning to enroll women. This year we celebrate this milestone and the many Carthage women who've passed through our doors over the last 150 years.

About the App:

Our product is an application that uses spatial data to outline a navigable tour of the Alice Moody Arboretum on the campus of Carthage College. The idea behind the app is to create a “nature walk” that users can follow along with using their mobile devices. The app contains a map of the college, designed using GIS software, along with significant natural features found on or near campus with a high precision GPS unit. Some of the natural features on the map include notable trees, rain gardens, waterways and pathways. Users of the app will be able to see their location in relation to these features so they are able to easily follow along. When the user is near a feature marked on the mobile app, they will have the ability to click on it, see a photo, and read a short description of that landmark.
